Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07470665573703929519noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9458036.post-80872915220496700522012-01-25T13:20:00.000+08:002012-01-25T13:20:31.532+08:00Scanner Troubles - Canon ImageFORMULA DR-C125

There was a problem with my Canon ImageFORMULA DR-C125 yesterday.

When I scanned the first few pages of the 10-some books I just tore apart, it showed the error message "A double paper-feed has occurred. Please check the document and the scanned image on the display and scan the document again" even though there was clearly no double paper feed at all. After a several attempts which all resulted in the same message, I did everything that I could think of - turned off and on the scanner, cleaned inside the scanner, rebooted PC and etc. but nothing worked.

So I went to Canon's website and downloaded the latest version (Ver2.3) of the CaptureOnTouch application to install. After some more struggle on some stupid reason, this re-installation of the software did the trick and I could scan pages no problem.

*****

Above mentioned another struggle - after re-installing the application, I thought there was a new option in the PDF setting screen, which was to let you choose whether to make the document compatible with PDF/A format. Naturally I selected this option thinking it wouldn't do any harm, which actually turned out to have been kind of a mistake - it limited the subsequent OCR language options and there was no Japanese (I was scanning Japanese books).

I thought updating the CaptureOnTouch software caused this problem so I again removed the software and then re-installed the original version, which didn't solve the problem until I deselected the PDF/A compatibility option (well, it wasn't a new feature for V2.3). It only took me about three hours to sort all these out... The scanner has been working fine.

*****

Just thought there might be someone who is facing the same problem.

In Japanese it means something like "no problem", but in Chinese it means a big man. Chinese is quite literal in this one.

She also asked me about what 馬鹿 (baka) meant in Japanese. She said she saw the word when she was playing a Gundam video game which came from Japan. This word doesn't exist in Chinese in the sense we Japanese use, which is "stupid." I thought there had been some history to it as to why those characters were used, but as I searched on the internet, it seems it's just another case of ateji.

Anyway, back to the topic of 快樂 and 快楽, the former is mostly used in expressing the joy of festivity in the Chinese culture, but in Japanese the original meaning has very much faded and it means indulging kind of physical pleasure (thus sexual pleasure most of the time), which is apparent when you do the image search by the word. Then I wonder what the equivalent of Japanese 快楽 is in Chinese.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07470665573703929519noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9458036.post-48112583479231133572009-08-24T17:37:00.003+08:002009-08-24T17:46:07.581+08:00shugiin senkyoOne disadvantage with not reporting your moving out of the country is that you cannot vote through overseas absentee ballot. Too bad I didn't know about this website until recently.

nciku

Below are some features that I think are good:

Shows results from a few diffrent dictionaries with sentence examples.

You can listen to most of the sentence examples.

Words and phrases looked up are instantly added to the Vocab List.

You can take tests (Learning Definitions, Learning Words, Dictation, and Writing), out of which I particularly find Dictation and Writing useful to me.

Automatically records the result of the test to help visualize your study progress.

My Madarin laoshi told me that my grammer and pronounciation are ok, but my vocabulary should be expanded. I think this webtool can certainly help this purpose. So below will be my study procedure.

Listen and study Chinesepod skits.

Lookup unfamiliar words in nciku.

Randomely review nciku Vocab List in a frequent cycle.

Put Chinesepod skits in iPod and listen and listen and listen.

I wish there were things equivelant for Cantonese. As online tools are quite limited for the language, I just study in an old-fashioned way - read printed text books. I wonder if the market for Cantonese is too small for developers to focus on.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07470665573703929519noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9458036.post-18371393736858340922009-04-09T00:31:00.002+08:002009-04-09T00:45:57.528+08:00tram stake soldA French company has purchased 50% of the tram stake. Their intention seems to be to gain some experience in Hong Kong before going into the mainland market where they plan to provide urban rail services. I wonder if anything will be changed under their management. I don't ride trams very often but I like how they haven't changed for a long time.

Some facts from newspaper:
Tram company's earnings in 2007 was HKD10 mil while in 2008 HKD30 mil.

The surge is from advertisement. I was wondering how they made profit when they charge only HKD2(?) a customer (it's not that a thousand people can ride a tram at the same time), but yes, they are now full of advertisements on the outside.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07470665573703929519noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9458036.post-66504689164691625642009-02-22T08:50:00.003+08:002009-02-22T09:26:46.096+08:00federal reserve movieFinally had the time to watch the YouTube clips Alicia sent me more than a month ago.
